Tile Installation in Edgewood
Craftsman cottages, renovated kitchens, and older bathrooms. Edgewood keeps us busy.
Edgewood sits just north of East Atlanta, bounded roughly by Moreland Ave to the west and the railroad corridor to the north. The neighborhood's housing stock is a mix of early 20th century craftsman cottages along streets like Clifton Ave and Edgewood Ave, and a growing number of renovated and rebuilt homes that reflect the area's ongoing investment. Kitchen and bathroom tile are the most common calls we get from Edgewood homeowners, often as part of larger kitchen or bath renovations.
Local Focus: Edgewood
The craftsman cottages along Edgewood Ave and Clifton Ave typically have galley-style kitchens where backsplash work requires careful planning around older cabinet configurations. We've found that these kitchens often have slightly out-of-plumb walls, which means the layout needs to account for that rather than fight it. A tile that's set plumb to the wall will look tilted if the wall itself is off. We set to level, not to the wall, and use a scribe cut at the cabinet line.

Edgewood FAQ
Are there HOA restrictions on tile work in Edgewood?
Most of Edgewood is not governed by an HOA. Individual streets or newer condo developments may have their own rules, but the majority of single-family homes in Edgewood don't have HOA oversight. If you're in a condo or a newer planned community, check your CC&Rs before scheduling work that involves shared walls or plumbing.
My Edgewood kitchen has original 1940s cabinets. Can you tile around them without removing them?
Yes. We tile to the cabinet face, with a clean scribe cut at the edge. We don't need to remove cabinets for a standard backsplash installation. If the cabinet base has an uneven gap at the counter, we address that with caulk rather than grout, which handles any slight movement over time.
How do I know if my bathroom walls can support new tile without removing the old tile first?
We tap-test the existing tile during the walkthrough. Hollow-sounding tiles indicate the adhesion has failed, and tiling over them would transfer that instability to the new layer. If the existing tile is solid and the surface is flat, tiling over it is sometimes viable. But in wet areas like showers, we generally recommend removal so we can inspect and waterproof the substrate properly.
Does Atlanta's humidity affect which grout I should use in a kitchen?
Humidity matters more in bathrooms than kitchens, but it's worth noting that epoxy grout is more moisture-resistant than cement-based grout and is easier to clean in a kitchen environment. Cement grout is still a good choice for most kitchens when properly sealed. We can discuss the options when we visit.
