Vertical Subway Backsplash in Edgewood
About This Project
This Edgewood kitchen used classic white 3x6 subway tile set vertically rather than horizontally, which gives the same tile a distinctly more contemporary feel. Vertical subway draws the eye upward and works particularly well in kitchens with lower ceilings, which is common in Edgewood's older craftsman stock. The tile runs from counter to ceiling in this case, which required careful planning around the floating wood shelves the homeowner had already installed.

What We Did
- Established a vertical plumb reference line at the center of the main backsplash run
- Set tile vertically from the counter up, working around existing shelf bracket hardware
- Cut tiles cleanly around three outlet boxes, installed extender rings, and replaced outlet covers
- Grouted with light gray unsanded grout and caulked at all transitions
Setting subway tile vertically is a small decision that produces a noticeably different result. In this Edgewood kitchen with 9-foot ceilings, it made the space feel taller and less predictable than a standard horizontal run would have.
