Kitchen Backsplash

The details that separate a finished kitchen from an unfinished one.

What Makes a Backsplash Job Go Well

A kitchen backsplash sounds straightforward. It's a relatively small surface area, and the tile is usually thinner and lighter than floor tile. But the details that make a backsplash look sharp are worth understanding before the work starts.

The most visible quality indicator in a backsplash is the grout joint consistency. Joints that vary in width, or that aren't parallel, are noticeable. We use tile spacers throughout and check alignment frequently. The other thing that matters is the cut quality around outlets, under cabinets, and at the counter edge. These are the spots where rushed work shows.

What the Installation Involves

We start by removing the outlet covers and protecting the countertop surface. The wall surface is checked for any areas that need repair or priming. For most kitchen walls (drywall or plaster), we use a polymer-modified thinset appropriate for the tile type.

Layout is planned from the center of the main visual run (usually the section behind the range or sink) outward, so the cuts at the ends are symmetric. For herringbone and chevron patterns, the layout planning takes longer because the diagonal introduces more variables.

Cuts around outlets are made with a wet saw or an angle grinder with a diamond blade, depending on the tile material and the shape of the cut. Outlet boxes get extension rings if the tile thickness puts them recessed. We reinstall outlet covers at the end.

Tile Options for Kitchens

The most common choices we install for kitchen backsplashes are subway tile (horizontal, vertical, or herringbone), zellige-style handmade tiles, large-format porcelain slabs, and mosaic sheets. Each has different installation requirements.

Zellige and handmade tiles have natural thickness variation, which means the setting bed needs to be adjusted tile by tile to keep the face flat. This takes more time than setting uniform machine-made tile but produces a noticeably richer result.
