Bathroom & Shower Tile

Wet areas need more than good tile. They need a proper waterproof system underneath.

How We Approach Bathroom Tile

01

Assess and Demo

We check the existing surface, look for moisture damage, and remove the old tile if needed. What's underneath tells us what prep is required.

02

Waterproofing

In showers and wet zones, we install a waterproof membrane (RedGard or similar) over cement backer board before any tile goes up. This is the step that prevents water from reaching the wall framing.

03

Set and Grout

Tile is set with appropriate thinset (white thinset for light-colored tiles to prevent bleed-through), grouted with sanded or unsanded grout depending on joint width, and sealed.

04

Finish Details

Caulk at all plane changes (floor-to-wall, wall-to-fixture), niche installation if applicable, and cleanup. We don't use grout at corners, because grout cracks there. Caulk handles movement.

What We Cover in Bathrooms

Shower walls and floors are the most common bathroom tile jobs. Tub surrounds are close behind. We also tile bathroom floors, vanity walls, and occasionally full bathroom walls when a homeowner wants a cohesive look throughout.

Shower pan work deserves its own mention. A properly sloped shower pan, whether tiled or prefab, is essential for drainage. When we tile a shower floor, we slope toward the drain at a quarter inch per foot. Getting this wrong means standing water and eventual moisture damage.

Niche installation in shower walls is something we handle regularly. A niche needs to be waterproofed independently before tile goes in, and the slope at the bottom needs to drain water out rather than hold it.

Materials We Work With

We install porcelain, ceramic, natural stone (marble, travertine, slate), and glass tile. Each material has different handling requirements. Natural stone needs to be back-buttered individually. Glass tile requires white thinset and a non-sagging formula to prevent slipping. Large-format porcelain needs full coverage thinset to prevent hollow spots. We adjust our method to the material.
