Tile Installation in East Atlanta

Our home base. We work throughout the East Atlanta Village corridor and surrounding blocks.

East Atlanta is the neighborhood we know best. Our shop sits on Flat Shoals Ave SE, a few blocks from the East Atlanta Village commercial strip. The housing stock here is mostly bungalows and craftsman cottages built between the 1920s and 1950s, with a growing number of newer infill homes on lots that were vacant or subdivided. Both types come with their own tile considerations. The older homes often have plaster walls and wood-framed floors that need careful assessment before tile goes up. The newer builds tend to be on slab, which simplifies floor prep but doesn't eliminate it.

What Makes East Atlanta Homes Different

  • Majority of housing stock dates to the 1920s-1950s, with original wood-framed subfloors that require backer board before tile
  • Plaster walls are common in older bathrooms, requiring scoring or skim-coat before tile adhesion
  • Narrow bathroom layouts typical of bungalow-era construction mean careful layout planning to avoid awkward cuts
  • Newer infill homes on Glenwood Ave and adjacent streets are slab-on-grade, which changes the floor prep approach entirely

East Atlanta FAQ

Do I need a permit to retile a bathroom in East Atlanta?

For a straight retile (removing old tile and installing new tile on the same surface), a permit is not typically required in the City of Atlanta. If the work involves moving plumbing, changing the shower pan structure, or altering the drain location, that's a different scope and may require permits. We can help you understand what applies to your specific project.

My East Atlanta bungalow has original hardwood floors in some rooms. Can tile be installed next to them?

Yes, and this is a common situation in East Atlanta homes. The transition between tile and hardwood needs a proper threshold strip that accommodates the height difference between the two surfaces. We plan the tile thickness and setting bed depth to minimize the step, and we install a T-bar or reducer threshold at the transition.

How do you handle parking and access for jobs on residential streets in East Atlanta?

Most of our work in East Atlanta involves street parking for our truck and equipment. We keep our footprint small and typically need one parking spot close to the front of the house. On narrow streets near the Village, we sometimes coordinate with you about timing to make drop-off easier. We don't need a driveway, but it helps to know about any parking restrictions on your block.

Can you work in occupied homes, or do I need to move out?

Most tile jobs can be done in an occupied home. Bathroom work means that bathroom is out of use for a few days. Kitchen backsplash work is typically done in a single day with the kitchen usable again by evening. We contain dust as much as possible with drop cloths and plastic sheeting, and we clean up at the end of each work day.
