Herringbone Kitchen Backsplash in East Atlanta

Warm beige herringbone tile backsplash with open oak shelves in an East Atlanta kitchen

About This Project

This kitchen renovation in a renovated East Atlanta bungalow included a full backsplash installation in a warm beige ceramic tile set in a 45-degree herringbone pattern. The homeowner had added floating oak shelves above the counter, which meant the tile had to be cut precisely around the shelf brackets and the shelf undersides. Herringbone layout requires establishing a true center point and working both directions simultaneously to keep the pattern symmetric across the full run.

What We Did

  1. Established the center point of the main backsplash run and snapped diagonal reference lines at 45 degrees
  2. Set tile outward from center, cutting perimeter tiles to fit cabinet edges and shelf bracket locations
  3. Installed outlet box extenders to bring outlets flush with the new tile surface
  4. Grouted with white unsanded grout and caulked at counter-to-tile and cabinet-to-tile transitions

A herringbone pattern takes longer to set than a straight stack but reads as significantly more intentional in the finished space. This East Atlanta kitchen was a good candidate for it.
