Travertine Shower Wall in Reynoldstown
About This Project
This shower renovation in a Reynoldstown home paired large-format travertine-look porcelain on the lower walls with a vertical band of narrow glazed accent tiles above. The design transition between the two tile types required precise planning: the accent tile height needed to align with the top of the valve trim plates, and the vertical accent band needed to be centered on the back wall relative to the valve placement. The brushed nickel fixtures were already installed, so we worked around the existing rough-in without moving any plumbing.

What We Did
- Installed cement backer board on all shower walls, applied waterproof membrane with extra attention around valve penetrations
- Planned the tile transition height to align with valve trim plate tops, established reference lines for both tile types
- Set large-format travertine-look tile on lower walls, then set narrow vertical accent tiles above, maintaining the design transition cleanly
- Grouted with cream grout throughout, caulked at all inside corners and plane changes
Two-material shower walls are more common in Reynoldstown's renovated homes than in older original construction. Getting the transition line right is the detail that makes or breaks the look.
