Coastal Blue Tub Surround in Reynoldstown
About This Project
This Reynoldstown cottage bathroom renovation used coastal blue glazed 4x12 subway tile for the tub surround, running from the tub deck to the ceiling. The glazed finish on these tiles has a slight variation in tone across the surface, which gives the installation more visual depth than a uniform tile would. A recessed niche was built into the back wall during the backer board phase, waterproofed independently, and tiled with the same tile to integrate cleanly. The matte black rain shower and fixtures were already in place, and we worked around the existing rough-in locations.

What We Did
- Removed original tub surround, framed and waterproofed the recessed niche box before backer board went up
- Installed cement backer board on all three tub walls, applied waterproof membrane throughout
- Set tile in a horizontal offset pattern starting from a level line at the tub deck, maintaining consistent joints to ceiling
- Grouted with dark grout to complement the blue tile, caulked at tub-to-tile transition and inside corners
Reynoldstown's older cottages often have narrow bathrooms where a bold tile color is the right move. This blue reads strong without overwhelming a small space.
